About the Doc

Dr. Lara Sweeney, DC, has dedicated her life and career to identifying and addressing the underlying causes of some of the most complex cases and evasive conditions, using a ground-breaking approach that assesses and addresses all systems of the body called Functional Medicine.

Filling the various voids of the current healthcare system, Dr. Sweeney works with patients from all walks of life and with other practitioners across all disciplines and mindsets, interpreting the results of blood chemistry panels and other specialty lab tests.

Dr. Sweeney primarily works with patients who suffer autoimmune disorders of all types (MS, Lupus, Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, Grave’s Disease, Celiac Disease, Autoimmune Inner Ear Disorder, Scleroderma, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Sjogren’s, Diabetes Type 1, and many more), as well as those with mystifying gastrointestinal disorders or glandular/hormone imbalances.  As a featured guest on 1200 AM WOAI’s Wellness Matters radio show, she speaks on various aspects of Functional Medicine, including food intolerance and its impact on autoimmune, gastrointestinal, and glandular disorders.  She lives with her family in San Antonio, Texas, and practices with her husband, also a Doctor of Chiropractic, functional neurologist, and neuromuscular doctor at San Antonio Family Alternative Medicine.

Considered an “aggressive learner”, Dr. Sweeney’s education and training are extensive!  Before graduating from chiropractic medical school (Parker College of Chiropractic, now known as Parker University), she studied functional neurology for several years at the world-renowned Carrick Institute for Graduate studies located in Cape Canaveral, Florida.

After obtaining her doctorate in chiropractic , she immediately began formal post-doctoral training in Functional Medicine through the University of Bridgeport, a holistic multi-disciplinary institution in Connecticut, where she studied blood chemistry analysis, functional endocrinology, functional neurology, and a special focus on thyroid disorders.  She has personally taken classes with Dr. Datis Kharrazian.

Once she had exhausted all of their offerings, she sought a year and a half of additional post-doctoral education in Certified Clinical Nutrition, of which she is now board eligible, soon to be board certified.  Her Clinical Nutrition studies covered not only nutrition, but additional lab analysis, herbology, homeopathy, and specific disorders/diseases such as cancer and diabetes.

In September 2013, she began the 4-to-5-year journey with the international Institute for Functional Medicine located in Federal Way, Washington.  IFM has long been considered the “Ivy League” (such as Yale or Harvard) of Functional Medicine.  In that program, she is currently studying functional gastroenterology, mitochondrial/energy function/dysfunction, functional cardiometabolism, functional immunology, liver detoxification/biotransformation, functional genetics, and additional functional endocrinology.  She plans to obtain full IFM certification, slated for around 2016-2017.  Students of this program are over 50% MDs and DOs, with only about 13% being chiropractic doctors (DCs).  She has personally taken classes with cutting-edge instructors such as Dr. Mark Hyman and Dr. Tom O’Bryan.

In September 2014, she also attended the international Integrative Medicine for Mental Health conference, where she got to rub shoulders with actual publishers of original scientific research.

In addition, she has attended several famous world-wide web-based “summits”, such as the Gluten Summit (hosted by the world-renowned Dr. Tom O’Bryan), the Thyroid Summit, the Detox Summit, and the Integrative Medicine Summit.  Because Dr. Sweeney is who she is, she has also purchased the audio and video recordings for easy review and refreshment.

Although she holds a license to practice chiropractic medicine, please don’t be misled into believing that she only deals with neck or back pain!  In fact, she does not do spinal or any other joint manipulation at all.  In fact, she functions much more like a holistic MD or DO.  She thinks like one, tests like one, addresses and supports a wide range of health issues like one, and attends the same classes right alongside them.

Private consultations are available.  She can be reached at (+1) (210) 340-2150.

  1. Hi
I live in Los Angeles and have been suffering from severe GERD and Gastritis for years.. although I take meds, I feel that I have intolerance to many foods and probably different microbes ect… I was treated for h pylo years ago and recently after a breath test was put on more antibiotics to no good effect… Is there a clinic in LA that you know of similar to yours which can treat my condition do the food intolerance tests you mention above?

    • Sure! I’m sure there are several. FunctionalMedicine.org has a Practitioner Locator that can help people locate the better Functional Medicine doctors/practitioners in the US and around the world. Other people who make a connection with a particular FM doctor often make a periodic journey to their clinic and then do the rest of the work (follow-ups and such) from a distance using phone, email, regular mail, Skype, or services like GoToMeeting. The best solution is the one that works best for you – simply make sure that doctor has the genuine Functional Medicine training. Definitely look for those that do NOT make you prepay $5-10k for their “program” up front. Good luck, and please let us know if we can help 🙂
